Leslie Emery
American, 1912-1998

Joined Carmel Art Association in 1946.

Leslie Emery left Massachusetts at the age of 8 and moved to Georgetown, Washington, D.C., where he eventually spent three years at the Corcoran School of Art. After painting portraits for a number of years, he moved to Falls Church, Virginia and was a Resident Artist for the W.P.A. During WWII, he served in the Army Air Force in North Africa and in Italy. At the close of the war, he went to Los Angeles to paint portraits of the “movie people.” One day, he drove up to Carmel, decided to settle and purchased a house that same day. In 1952 he married Leora Sims, a fourth-generation Californian. His commissions include a portrait of General George Marshall
