Harriet Randall Lumis was born in Salem, Connecticut in 1870.  She moved to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1892 following her marriage to a budding architect who would become City Buildings Commissioner.  Lumis’ formal art training began with the tonalist Willis Seaver Adams.  Later she studied with Leonard Ochtman at the New York Summer School in Mianus, Connecticut, and in 1920 with Hugh Breckenridge at the Breckenridge School of Art at Rocky Neck, Gloucester.  She became an exhibiting member of the Connecticut Academy of the Fine Arts in 1913, wasa founder of the Springfield Art League in 1919, and was elected to the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors in 1921.  Her work was exhibited nationally at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the Connecticut Academy of the Fine Arts, the Buffalo Society of Artists, the Women’s National Exposition in St. Louis, Carson Pirie Scott in Chicago, and in numerous regional exhibitions.  Lumis died in Springfield in 1953.  When she died a portion of the works in her studio were given to the local school district to be put on display in the buildings so that the children could be exposed to art on a daily basis.
